Built to disappear, which is the problem
A Freedom column is designed so that you cannot tell it is an appliance. It is panel-ready, it sits flush in the cabinet run, and in most of the kitchens we work in it has been scribed, trimmed and sometimes capped in stone so that it reads as joinery.
That is the entire point of the product and it is also why a column service call takes longer than the equivalent call on a freestanding refrigerator. Almost everything worth reaching, including the water connections, the condenser area and the sealed system, is behind or beneath the unit. The column has to come forward on its rails before real diagnosis begins.
The sequence, and why it is a sequence
Custom panel and handle come off first, and they come off carefully, because they were made for this opening and there is no spare.
The water supply gets shut off before anything moves. On these installations the valve is frequently not where you would want it: inside a neighbouring cabinet, behind a toe-kick, occasionally in an adjacent room. Finding it is part of the job and it is worth knowing where yours is before you ever need us.
The floor gets protected before the column moves an inch. Engineered timber, wide plank and soft stone do not forgive a heavy appliance dragged across them, and a scratched floor costs more than most refrigeration repairs.
The anti-tip and mounting hardware gets documented as it comes out, so it goes back exactly as it was. A column that is not properly secured is a genuine hazard, not a paperwork detail.
Only then does diagnosis start.
What this means for your appointment
It means the first visit is a diagnostic visit and we tell you that plainly. We would rather establish exactly what has failed, put a written estimate in your hands, and come back with the correct part than guess at a part on the first trip so we only have to make one.
It also means a few details you can give us at booking genuinely change how the day goes: what the floor is, whether the column is stone-capped or trimmed into a run, whether you know where the water shut-off is, and whether the opening was original or retrofitted.
Retrofitted openings are the hard ones
In Riverside, Avondale and the older parts of St. Augustine, and in Southside kitchens remodelled around older layouts, columns have often been fitted into openings that were enlarged by hand. Those openings are frequently out of square, out of plumb, or both, and the clearance for pulling the unit forward can be almost nothing.
Where that is the case we will tell you before we start rather than after something is damaged. Occasionally the honest answer is that a particular repair is not viable without joinery work, and that is a decision for the owner rather than for us.
While it is out
If a column is already forward, it is the natural moment to clean the condenser area properly, check the water line and filter housing, inspect door closers and alignment, and look at anything that has been quietly getting worse behind the panel. In the coastal ZIPs, checking the condenser at that point is worth doing regardless of what the call was about.
