Thermador Steam Oven Repair
A small water system inside an oven: fill, heat, level sensing, drain and a sealed door. Weak steam is one of those five, and they are separable in an hour.
Symptoms we hear
Described as behaviour rather than as a code. We do not publish fault codes we cannot verify, and a symptom narrows a diagnosis further than a number does anyway.
- Steam output is weak or arrives long after the cycle should have started
- The reservoir empties without the cavity ever filling with steam
- The oven reports a water fault with a full and correctly seated reservoir
- A cycle begins normally and then abandons itself partway through
- Water sits in the cavity after a cycle instead of draining
- Condensation appears on the trim or the cabinetry rather than inside
- Cooking results have quietly drifted, with food drying instead of steaming
- The unit is dead after other work was done in the kitchen or under the sink
What actually fails
- The steam generator and its heating element, which can go open circuit or trip a thermal cutout that does not reset
- Water level sensing, which stops the appliance rather than risk dry-firing a heater when it reads incorrectly
- The fill pump and the drain pump, and on plumbed models the shut-off, supply line and inlet screen upstream of the appliance
- Solenoid valves that no longer open fully, so the mould or generator receives a short charge
- Door gaskets that harden or take a set and stop sealing a humid cavity
- Hinges and springs on a heavy built-in door, which cannot compress a seal evenly once worn
Five jobs, and only one of them is heat
A steam oven has to get water into a generator, heat it, know how much of it is there, push the vapour into the cavity, and drain what is left. Almost every complaint we take is one of those five failing, and the useful thing about that list is that it is short enough to work through in order on a single visit.
The expensive assumption is that weak steam means a failed generator. Sometimes it does. Far more often the generator is fine and is being starved by the fill side, misinformed by level sensing, or undone by a door that no longer seals. Replacing the generator first is fast, satisfying, and frequently wrong.
Reservoir models and plumbed models fail differently
This is the first question we ask, because it changes the whole diagnosis.
A reservoir-fed oven draws from a tank you fill by hand. Its faults are mundane and local to the appliance: a tank not fully seated, a pickup seal, a pump that hums without moving water, or a valve that lets the charge run to drain before it ever becomes steam.
A plumbed oven takes mains water through a shut-off, a supply line and an inlet valve, and a surprising share of its faults sit outside the appliance entirely. A shut-off closed during other work and never reopened, a shut-off finished into cabinetry where nobody can reach it, a line kinked when the unit was pushed back into its opening, or an inlet screen full of debris from plumbing work elsewhere in the house — all four present as a broken oven and none of them are one. When a plumbed unit reports a water fault the day after somebody worked under the sink, that is not a coincidence.
Level sensing, and why the machine stops
An oven that fills correctly and heats correctly can still refuse to steam because it does not believe there is water present. Level sensing is what stands between the appliance and a dry-fired heating element, so the design is deliberately conservative: when the reading is not trustworthy, the cycle stops.
That is the class of fault behind a full reservoir producing a water warning, and behind a cycle that starts normally and abandons itself halfway. It is a measurement problem rather than a heating problem, and it is fixed at the sensor or its wiring. Sensors are cheap and measurable; boards are neither. We measure first.
Drain, seal and the results you actually notice
Water standing in the cavity after a cycle is a drain-side fault — the pump, the path it discharges into, or a restriction between them — and it is worth reporting early, because a cavity that never dries is hard on everything around it.
The seal is the quietest failure of the lot. A gasket that has hardened or taken a set lets vapour out as fast as it is produced, and the machine is working perfectly the whole time. The tell is condensation where it does not belong: on the trim, on the cabinetry above, or on the front of a unit stacked below. Door hinges belong to the same check, since a door that no longer closes square cannot compress a seal evenly.
Descaling is genuine maintenance on any steam oven, because boiling water leaves behind whatever was dissolved in it, and the manufacturer’s descale routine exists for that reason. Run it when the appliance asks, with the correct solution rather than a household substitute. Filtered or distilled water in a reservoir model costs almost nothing and reduces the frequency.
What the visit looks like
We reproduce the cycle rather than accept a description of it, then work in order: supply and heat, fill, level sensing, drain, seal. We read the model and serial from the plate on the door frame before ordering anything, because valves, sensors, pumps and hinge assemblies are specified by serial range and not by model alone. Then the estimate goes in writing with the part, the price and the expected wait.
Built-in coffee systems are close relatives of this appliance — a small water system inside a cabinet — and if you have one alongside the oven it is worth looking at during the same visit rather than paying for a second one.

Plumbed supply
This class is plumbed into the house, so the shut-off, the supply line, the filter and the drain path are part of every diagnosis, not an afterthought.
Which is why the first questions on a call are where the appliance is installed and how long it has been there, not which model it is.

After a steam ovens visit
Each entry is one visit: what failed, what was measured, what was changed. They are printed as they were given to us, and the less flattering ones are printed too.
The cavity was leaking water down the front of the cabinetry. He found a split silicone hose behind the liner where it had hardened with heat, replaced the hose and resealed the drain fitting.

The steam function works again after a new pump. I was not happy that the first diagnosis pointed at the tank, and I had already bought a replacement tank myself before the real fault was found.
Zeke Y.2025-09-18
Our steam unit had stopped making steam and kept flashing a fill warning. He found the level sensor scaled solid, descaled the boiler properly and showed me the water quality that caused it.
